What exactly are nonrefundable fares?

With nonrefundable airfares, the customer cannot refund the cost of a ticket if he or she cancels a trip. In all cases, changes to such fares must be made prior to the original date of travel and usually incur a change fee.

Generally, nonrefundable fares used to apply more to leisure travelers. However, in recent years these fares have been increasingly used by business travelers whose companies are unwilling to pay high refundable fares.
