A former city jail in the Beacon Hill neighborhood gets a reprieve this month when it debuts as The Liberty Hotel , a 300-room luxury boutique hotel.

The 1851 granite building -- fully restored for... oh, $120 million or so -- has retained many of its architectural elements, including a 90-foot rotunda, historic catwalks linking public spaces, vestiges of jail cells within the hotel lobby bar and over-sized windows.

In addition to the luxurious rooms and 10 suites (with views of the Charles River), the hotel property's new amenities include VOIP telephone in the guestrooms, a 24-hour fitness center, meeting facilities, three venues for dining and drinks, and a new 16-story tower that houses the majority of guestrooms.

The best part about doing time at The Liberty Hotel? You get to pick your cellmate. The Liberty Hotel is scheduled to open this month, 215 Charles St., Boston, 617.224.4000.
