Former Boston jail sentenced to life as hotel

A former jail in Boston's Beacon Hill section is getting a new lease on life as a 300-room luxury boutique hotel set to open in summer 2007.
The Liberty Hotel, a $120 million hotel project located at 215 Charles Street, will feature 10 suites with views of the Charles River, 6,000 square feet of meetings space, fitness facilities and a business center. Guest rooms will include such amenities as flat-panel HD-LCD televisions and high-speed Wi-Fi Internet access.
In short, the hotel is a far cry from its origins.
The original granite building, which has been fully restored, dates back to 1851, when it served as a city jail. Architectural elements such as the 90-foot central rotunda have been preserved along with catwalks linking public spaces and vestiges of jail cells, which will accent the hotel's lobby bar.
