French train strike sputters to a halt

The crippling nine-day train worker strike came to an end Friday in France, handing President Nicholas Sarkozy an important political victory.
Sarkozy had held tough on pension reform.
The Financial Times said services slowly returned to normal on the national rail and Paris metro systems after unions agreed to end their strike against plans to cut special pension privileges.
Unions, employers and the government may be locked in negotiations during the next month over pension reform, the newspaper said.
However, some union leaders maintained the strike was only "suspended," the report said, and if negotiations fail there could be further strikes before Christmas.
